Stralsund, Germany – German yacht builder Pioneer Yachts has reached a major milestone with the launch of the first hull of its innovative PY60 solar-electric catamaran, just two years after the company’s establishment. The 18-metre vessel, named Pioneer One, has officially touched the water and will now begin an extensive sea-trial programme before making its global debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026, scheduled for September 8–13.
Purpose-built around a fully integrated solar-electric propulsion system, the PY60 represents a new approach to sustainable yachting. Rather than adapting a conventional power catamaran to electric propulsion, Pioneer Yachts designed the vessel from the ground up to optimize solar energy generation, battery storage and electric propulsion for reliable, real-world cruising.

The yacht has been engineered and built in Germany, combining advanced technical innovation with a practical focus on efficiency, autonomy and ease of operation. Pioneer One will also serve as a development platform, with the company’s founder, engineer and entrepreneur Mike Frank, planning to operate the yacht personally to gather operational data that will help refine future production models.
“Seeing Pioneer One in the water is one of those moments you don’t forget,” Frank said. “This isn’t just another electric catamaran. It’s a completely new kind of yacht for this segment, designed for real operation. The upcoming sea trials will demonstrate exactly what it is capable of.”

Pioneer Yachts was founded after Frank identified a gap in the market for a truly capable solar-electric cruising yacht that could operate independently for extended periods. Supported by a team with more than 275 years of combined yacht-building experience, the company set out to develop a platform centered on efficiency, sustainability and owner-friendly operation.
The PY60 combines German engineering with Italian design expertise. Its exterior styling was created by Cossutti & Ganz, known for their work on Bavaria Yachts’ sailing range and championship-winning racing yachts, while the interiors were designed by Micheletti + Partners, whose portfolio includes projects for Baltic Yachts and Nautor’s Swan.
Designed for extended cruising, the yacht integrates solar panels, electric motors and diesel generators into a sophisticated energy-management system that minimizes dependence on shore-based charging infrastructure. The vessel is capable of reaching a top speed of 11 knots and cruises comfortably at 7.5 knots while delivering extended autonomy at sea.
At the heart of the PY60 is Pioneer Yachts’ proprietary Integrated Energy Architecture, which synchronizes solar energy production, battery storage and propulsion into a single intelligent system. The expansive solar roof generates much of the energy required during normal cruising, while high-capacity battery banks enable silent operation and prolonged periods of emission-free navigation. Under typical cruising conditions, the yacht can operate entirely on solar-electric power, significantly reducing reliance on conventional fossil fuels.

Efficiency has shaped every aspect of the vessel’s design. The hull form, weight distribution and superstructure were specifically developed to maximize energy efficiency without compromising comfort or onboard space. By integrating design and engineering from the earliest stages, Pioneer Yachts has created a platform where performance, aesthetics and sustainability work seamlessly together.
Despite its 60-foot length, the PY60 has also been designed for straightforward owner operation. Electric propulsion, simplified onboard systems and intuitive maneuvering controls enable private owners to operate the yacht without the need for a professional crew.
Supporting this philosophy is a simplified 48-volt electrical architecture that powers the yacht’s major onboard systems. By avoiding the complexity of high-voltage systems, Pioneer Yachts aims to deliver enhanced safety, improved reliability and easier maintenance, ensuring long-term ownership with reduced operational complexity.
With Pioneer One now entering sea trials, Pioneer Yachts is preparing to showcase its vision for the future of sustainable cruising when the PY60 makes its official world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026.
