New York, USA – VMG (Velocity Made Good), a newly established shipyard specializing in high-performance luxury trimarans, has officially launched and announced that construction is underway on its first model, the VMG 53 — a cutting-edge 53-foot trimaran designed to blend offshore racing performance with premium cruising comfort.
Headquartered in New York and supported by an international team of sailors, designers, and marine industry experts, VMG aims to redefine offshore cruising by bringing advanced multihull technology into serial production. The company’s vision centers on delivering a new generation of trimarans that combine speed, comfort, safety, and long-range cruising capability without compromise.

The VMG story began during an offshore sailing race off the New England coast, where co-founders Michael Schwartz and Karl Reed met as crewmates. Inspired by discussions during a challenging passage, the pair envisioned a yacht that could seamlessly unite performance, luxury, and ease of handling. That concept evolved into a full-scale development project, which has now culminated in the VMG 53 currently under construction in Cape Town, South Africa.

Schwartz brings more than 25 years of experience in product development, manufacturing, and business growth across several industries, while Reed’s career spans yacht operations, management, brokerage, and professional multihull sailing. Together, they have assembled a world-class team to bring their vision to life.
The VMG 53 has been designed by renowned French naval architecture firm VPLP Design, internationally recognized for pioneering some of the world’s fastest ocean-racing multihulls. Interior styling is being led by Christophe Chedal Anglay, while Thorne Yacht Design is responsible for engineering and technical development.

Construction is taking place in partnership with Evolution Marine Manufacturing, a Cape Town-based specialist composite boatbuilder known for producing advanced performance yachts. The new trimaran is engineered to deliver exceptional speed and efficiency while offering the comfort, space, and practicality expected from a luxury offshore cruiser.
“From the beginning, our goal has been to create the yacht we wanted to own ourselves,” said Michael Schwartz, Founder and Principal of VMG. “We believe we have a unique opportunity to combine world-class design, genuine sailing performance, and practical cruising capability in a way that has not previously been achieved in a production trimaran. Through the VMG 53 and future models, we aim to make leading-edge trimaran technology accessible to a broader audience.”

The company’s name, Velocity Made Good (VMG), reflects a key sailing metric that measures how effectively a yacht converts speed into progress toward its destination. According to the founders, it also symbolizes the company’s commitment to intelligent design, innovation, and efficiency.
With construction progressing according to schedule, the first VMG 53 is expected to be launched and delivered in January 2027, marking the debut of a new player in the luxury multihull market.
