Conceived for Transcend Cruises, the 135-metre yacht-inspired river vessel represents an ambitious new vision for luxury cruising, combining the refined sensibility of a private yacht with the warmth and intimacy of a contemporary boutique hotel.

Purpose-built for an entirely new generation of river travel, the vessel is designed to challenge long-held perceptions of what a river cruise ship can be. With an emphasis on flexibility, bespoke experiences and sophisticated hospitality, it has been created to accommodate luxury group journeys, private charters, corporate gatherings and exclusive events — all while offering guests an exceptional level of comfort and personal service.

At the heart of the concept is an unprecedented degree of adaptability. Working closely with Transcend Cruises, TDoS set out to create not simply an elegant ship, but an entirely new product category for the river cruise market.

As Anna Silvesjö, Chief Executive Officer of Viken Group, explains: “We weren’t simply designing beautiful interiors – we were helping define an entirely new product category.”

The Art of Effortless Luxury

Accommodating up to 120 guests, the vessel offers an intimate experience supported by a crew of 54 — an exceptionally high crew-to-guest ratio that allows service to feel highly attentive without ever becoming intrusive.

The ship features 60 generously proportioned staterooms, primarily arranged across two accommodation decks. Yet, in keeping with its philosophy of flexibility, the configuration can be transformed to create up to 30 expansive two-room suites, allowing the vessel to adapt seamlessly to the needs of different groups and charter programmes.

This ability to transform is perhaps the ship’s defining characteristic. Here, luxury is not simply about beautiful surroundings; it is about giving guests the freedom to shape the experience around them.

A Private World Above the River

The uppermost deck has been conceived as a destination in its own right — an elevated retreat where the river landscape becomes the backdrop to an extraordinary collection of leisure experiences.

The social heart of the vessel is the Forum, a dramatic two-storey amphitheatre-style space that can effortlessly shift between presentations, performances, celebrations, destination briefings and informal gatherings.

Additional spaces include the main lounge and aft lounge, a dedicated barista bar, library, private salons, chef’s table, wine vault and grill — creating a rich tapestry of settings for dining, conversation, entertainment and discovery.

For those seeking a more restorative journey, wellness takes centre stage with a spa, fitness studio, yoga space and sauna, all complemented by views across the passing river landscape.

Inspired by the World of Yachting

The design language of the vessel deliberately moves away from the conventions of traditional cruise ships.

Instead, TDoS drew inspiration from the world of contemporary yachting and high-end residential hospitality, creating interiors that feel quietly luxurious rather than ostentatious.

Natural timber, textured stone, soft fabrics and warm metals come together in a carefully layered palette that is tactile, understated and timeless. Decorative excess has been consciously avoided in favour of materials and finishes that feel authentic, elegant and enduring.

Yet beneath the visual refinement lies an equally considered approach to performance. Every material has been selected to withstand the demands of intensive operation while ageing gracefully over time, balancing durability and ease of maintenance with a sophisticated aesthetic.

Natural light plays an equally important role. Expansive windows draw the ever-changing landscape into the interiors, while the warm, tactile palette acts as a subtle frame for the scenery beyond.

For TDoS, the ambition was to create an experience that transcends the conventional idea of being “on board” a ship.

“Our ambition was to create an environment that immediately feels welcoming, spacious and connected to its surroundings,” says Silvesjö. “Rather than creating the feeling of being inside a ship, we wanted guests to feel as though they were moving through a contemporary boutique hotel or private yacht that just happens to travel along Europe’s rivers.”

The effect is achieved through generous sightlines, layered lighting and carefully choreographed transitions between spaces, supported by a strong visual relationship with the world outside.

The interiors possess a distinctly residential character, encouraging guests to settle in and feel immediately at ease. At the same time, discreetly integrated technology allows the ship’s spaces to adapt to the demands of different events, meetings and private charter programmes.

Designed to Transform

Creating such a versatile experience within the confines of a river vessel presented TDoS with a unique set of challenges.

Unlike the ocean-going cruise ships and luxury yachts typically designed by the studio, river vessels operate within tighter physical parameters. Every square metre therefore needed to serve a purpose, while the overall experience had to retain a sense of openness and spaciousness.

Through masterful planning, double-height spaces, generous glazing and carefully considered circulation, TDoS has created an interior that feels significantly more expansive than its physical dimensions suggest.

But it is the vessel’s ability to transform that truly sets it apart.

Restaurants can evolve into sophisticated event venues. Lounges can become presentation spaces. Private dining rooms can be converted into meeting areas. Guest accommodations can shift effortlessly between individual staterooms and larger suites.

Achieving this required close collaboration between design, operations and technology from the earliest stages of development, ensuring that the vessel could respond fluidly to the ever-changing needs of its guests.

Kimberly Daley, Chief Operating Officer of Transcend Cruises, describes the ambition behind the project: “From the start, Transcend was a concept never before attempted in river cruise space. We sought a design partner who could design and deliver a ship completely different from anything else on the rivers today, and we found that partner in Tillberg.”

According to Daley, TDoS succeeded in bringing Transcend’s central promise of customization and flexibility to life through a design that is both visually striking and exceptionally adaptable.

Sustainability Without Compromise

Behind the elegance is a carefully considered approach to sustainability.

The vessel is capable of reaching service speeds of up to 14 knots and is powered by low-emission EU Stage V engines. An electric thruster system enables emission-free manoeuvring during close-in operations, while battery support helps manage peak energy demand.

Sustainability extends beyond propulsion. Food-waste minimisation technology, local sourcing and the use of sustainable onboard products form part of a broader operational philosophy designed to reduce the vessel’s environmental impact.

“Sustainability was a requirement from day one, not an afterthought,” Daley says. “Our clients expect it, and this vessel delivers it in how it is powered, provisioned and operated.”

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the vessel’s design is what guests may never consciously notice.

For TDoS, the true measure of luxury is not spectacle for spectacle’s sake, but the quiet confidence of a space that simply works.

“For us, luxury is not defined by excess,” says Silvesjö. “It comes from how effortlessly a space works and how comfortable it feels.”

“When guests experience the ship, we don’t necessarily want them to notice the complexity,” Silvesjö continues. “We want them to feel that everything simply works naturally around them.”
